Chase Away the Chills (Wayhaught--F/F Wynonna Earp)

Hey. Guys. Am I the last queer girl on earth who up until now had never seen Wynonna Earp?

OH.

MY.

GODDESS.

If you follow my stories, you know I only sail on the best of the best ships, and this ship, you guys...this is, and I am confident in saying this, the very best ship I have ever had the pleasure of boarding. I just can't. I don't know how I can explain the magic of Wayhaught to anyone who hasn't seen it; but I'll try! The show is an awesomely campy fantasy-western that laughs at its own jokes; it's also the most feminist and queer show I have ever seen on network TV. The only thing I can compare it to is Buffy, and fuck if THAT'S not the highest level of praise I could give. It's actually very much in the vein of a grown-up version of Buffy: Wynnona is the chosen-one demon-hunter lead, she of many verbal quips in the face of danger; their home in the Ghost River Triangle is the Hellmouth, and although she's supposed to be a lone wolf, she gathers an awesome crew of Scoobies around her, who are like 1,000% gayer and more feminist than the original Scoobies (the men are great feminists too, even the straight ones--which is a joy to watch. They could all be my lesbros). Wynnona is a great, funny, sassmouth-badass lead; and one of her best qualities is how devoted she is to her little sister Waverly. Who is, FYI, the most angelic and perfect human in the whole wide world. It's mentioned at various points in the show that Waverly was head cheerleader, prom queen, and Valedictorian in high school; and yet she's not even a little bit stuck-up, she's literally the nicest person in town (they had a vote. She got a sash). She's actually surprisingly insecure at times for someone who speaks four languages fluently, dances like a pro, and has the body of a tiny amazon (Wynonna's words). But by far the most prevailing and captivating feature of Waverly is her sweetness. She is, and I mean it, the sweetest girl in the world.

So. Who's good enough to date the sweetest girl in the world? One tall, dimpled, redheaded deputy sheriff (eventually the actual sheriff--in mid-S3, which is when this story is set). Nicole Haught is everything Waverly deserves; she's smooth and confident, she knows who she is, she's brave and loyal and treats Waverly like the angel she is. The arc of their love story is epic. Hyperbolically epic. "Like a beautiful fairytale-porno," as Waverly's BFF Jeremy (ANOTHER QUEER CHARACTER! WITH HIS OWN LOVE INTEREST!) has said.

Here is a short, heartbreakingly gorgeous video that sums up three seasons of Wayhaught in 6 minutes. The editorial quality of this video is insane, the person who made it should be getting paid, it's sickly amazing. I'm pretty confident it doesn't give away any plot spoilers.

And here's an even shorter one that's still really sweet but def a little less intense, that was shown at the Wayhaught panel at ClexaCon (I wasn't there, just saw it online).

That's if you haven't seen the show and you want to be as invested in this story as I am. Which you will be. I promise. Waverly and Nicole manage to be equally, epically adorable and hot together at the same time, which is quite a remarkable feat. They make out SO. MUCH. The way they stare at each other, the way they call each other baby...it's just too much. And on top of all that, they're both pivotal main characters with their own fully fleshed-out storylines; nobody's just there to be a love interest.

So! After all that rambling and swooning, here is my little Wayhaught story, at least one part; somebody yell if you're into it and want more! I admit I've gotten a lil discouraged about how not-queer things have gotten on this board, but I'm a pretty persistent little fuck anyway. Lol. The premise of this is pretty simple, and doesn't involve much plot, as per usual in my world. Waverly is kidnapped by a revenant (that's a resurrected bad guy demon) who wants the mysterious ring of Bulshar, which is currently in Waverly's possession as it's magic and she can't get it off her finger. Nicole and Wynonna have to go and rescue her. You also probably need to know that the show takes place in the frozen Canadian winter wilderness (filmed in Calgary, Alberta), and that it is a well-established fact that Waverly gets cold easily, which is reasonable since she is a tiny adorable person. (Side note, someone plz explain to me how someone so short can have legs for miles...?)

Did you watch the clip? ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAIRYTALE?

Ok. Enjoy! :)

Chase Away the Chills

Wayhaught/SFF

……………………………………….

The pale grey light of a frozen, snow-filled dawn illuminated the Canadian tundra as Nicole crested the top of the hill, her eyes landing on the tiny one-room cabin nestled deep in the trees. “Wynonna,” the tall cop gasped, yanking on her unofficial sister-in-law’s arm too tight even through the puffy parka sleeve.

“Ow! I see it, Haught, you don’t have to pull my arm off,” the brunette snapped, her voice a taught cord of anxiety. It was a mark of how terrified the young sheriff was that she didn’t retort back, after a day and a half of tracking the unknown revenant that had their Waverly in its clutches. Instead of replying, Nicole just launched herself into a stumbling, full-out run through the two-foot-deep snowfall already covering the hillside.

“Haught, slow down! You’re not doing Waverly any good if you break your neck!” Wynonna yelled, grabbing the redhead by the back of her belt to haul her upright again. “If she’s in there, that means there’s an about-to-be-so-dead revenant in there with her, probably expecting us. We need to be smart.”

“Waverly’s the smart one. I’m the bossy one, remember?” Nicole half-snarled. “Your words. Now just shut up and follow my lead for once, okay? I’m the God damn sheriff, Earp. I know what I’m doing.” The blaze of fury in Nicole’s brown eyes was so fierce, that for once Wynonna relented.

“Okay. Go. Let’s get our girl back.”

But when the cabin door banged open under Nicole’s heavy police boot, no red-eyed revenant stood waiting to pounce. There was only a wide, black scorch mark across one side of the floor…and on the other side, the youngest Earp sat shivering, bound to a heavy wooden chair with her head dropped forward, her long hair trailing across her lap.

“Waverly!” Nicole screamed, her voice choked with terror. “We’re here, please be okay, please!” Wynonna kept her gun raised a moment longer as Nicole scrambled across the small space and dropped to her knees in front of her girlfriend, cupping her face in both hands. She was so cold, it hurt.

“Knew you’d find me,” the younger girl whispered, her hazel eyes glassy and out of focus as she smiled weakly.

“You okay baby girl?” Wynonna asked anxiously, holstering her gun when it became clear that there was no one else there but the three of them.

“Oh, yeah…awes-s-some,” Waverly stuttered weakly through her shivers, as both her sister and her girlfriend fumbled to untie the thick, knotted ropes from her arms and legs.

“I’m so sorry baby, I’m so sorry we let this happen,” Nicole half-sobbed, taking her girlfriend’s newly freed hand and kissing the open palm reverently, before pressing it to the side of her face, where it stung like ice.

“S’not your f-fault,” the younger girl mumbled, her voice a soft croak between chattering teeth. “He w-wanted…Bulshar’s r-ring…” The ring in question was still resting stubbornly on Waverly’s finger, as secure as ever since the moment she’d impulsively put it on.

“Oh, I’ll show him where he can shove that goddam demon ring,” Wynonna snarled protectively, pulling her gun back out as soon as she’d finished untying the knots holding her little sister to the chair. “Where the fuck is this bag of deflated dicks, anyway?”

“Gone…” Waverly croaked softly, falling like a ragdoll into Nicole’s arms as soon as the ropes no longer held her stiff, exhausted body upright. “The ring…just…m-melted him…”

“Jesus, baby…you’re so cold,” the redhead groaned, gathering her sweet girl’s trembling body tight against her, so Waverly’s icy cheek was pressed against Nicole’s throat. “I got you now, Waves, I swear, I got you…” Nicole’s heart squeezed painfully in her chest as she thought about how long it had taken them to find her, how long she’d been out here freezing half to death. Sweet little Waverly, who couldn’t fall asleep without four blankets plus a bonus blanket, out here for nearly thirty-six hours in an unheated, one-room cabin in the middle of the quasi-arctic Canadian winter.

“Mmm…I know, babe…kn-n-new you’d c-come…” A painful, ragged cough escaped from blue lips as the younger girl feebly cupped a cold-numbed hand to her mouth.

“Wynonna, she’s sick. We have to get her out of here,” Nicole said fiercely, standing up with her girlfriend’s small, cold body cuddled protectively in her arms. Waverly heard her sister’s voice answering back, though the shapes of the words were blurry and sliding out of focus. She wanted to tell them she was okay now, that they shouldn’t worry…but her body wasn’t listening to her anymore, and her brain downshifted from words to simple awareness. Nicole’s warmth, her sweet smell of vanilla. Her sister’s reassuring voice.

Safe and secure in the care of the two people she loved most in the world, Waverly drifted woozily in and out of consciousness, aware of being carried, the warmth of Nicole’s throat against the side of her face, her girlfriend’s thumb tracing tiny circles over the back of her neck as they bumped over potholes in the passenger seat of Wynonna’s big blue pickup. She felt the gentle lurch as the truck came to a stop; but when she opened her eyes, the brightness of the swirling snow outside made her wince.

“Are we home?” the youngest Earp murmured faintly against her girlfriend’s throat.

“Yeah, baby girl, we’re home,” Wynonna said in the gentle voice that was reserved for her sister alone. “We’re gonna get you all warmed up and feeling better, okay?”

“Yeah…super-okay,” Waverly sighed, blinking her eyes open again without meaning to as a strange spark drifted up inside her head, making her breath hitch and tremble. She huffed softly, pressing the back of her knuckles against her cold nose; and she felt her girlfriend’s protective grip on her body tighten slightly, one hand cupped securely against the back of her head.

“Hhh…aahschxiuh!!! *S-snghf.*" A weak shiver coursed through Waverly’s chilled body as she pressed her nose firmly into her knuckles, trying not to sneeze directly into her girlfriend’s throat. But Nicole wasn’t complaining; she just pressed a kiss to the top of her girlfriend’s dark head.

“Aww, baby, bless you,” the tall cop hummed lovingly, nuzzling into Waverly’s hair and dropping a few more kisses there.

“Ughhhh…*snf!*…sorry I sneezed on you,” Waverly yawned softly, rubbing her nose against the back of her wrist with another slick sniffle.

“Shh. I don’t want you to be sorry, angel. I just wanna make you feel better,” Nicole cooed, sifting her fingers through her girlfriend’s long hair.

“Second that. Motion carries,” Wynonna said briskly, her usual dry humor mixing with approval as she gave the redhead cradling her little sister an encouraging nod. “So let’s get into the house and rustle up some bonus blankets. How about it?”

“Yes…please…” Waverly huffed softly again, her breath catching in her chest and breaking into a brittle cough. Nicole’s hand slid down from her hair to her back, rubbing soothing circles until the rattling ache subsided. “…Ouuuch,” the cold-numbed girl whispered absently to herself as it passed. A final kiss was pressed to the top of her head before the car door swung open, and she felt herself being carried briefly back out into the frigid winter air, and then, finally, into the light and warmth of their cozy little house.

“Hey…it’s my bed,” the woozy girl sighed happily as she was gently set down against the soft sheets. It wasn’t the first time Nicole had laid her down across the bed like that; but usually, it was with less clothes and more kissing. Not that Waverly had the energy to even think about sex just now.

“Yep, we’ll have you snug as a bug in no time, baby,” her girlfriend smiled sweetly, leaning down to kiss her cold forehead, one hand stroking the side of her face protectively.

“That’s such a weird expression, right?” Waverly yawned, her sleepy eyes drifting between her girlfriend and her sister, seeing how worried they both still looked. “Who decided…that bugs are so snug, anyway…?” The end of her sentence drifted into a soft huff of air as she raised one hand slowly to her face, her perfect little nose trembling irritably as a thin trickle of snot slipped from one side.

“Uhhh-hhh…” Her eyebrows quirked, and she cupped her palm more firmly over her mouth as her tired eyes slid closed, runny nose pinched lightly between her fingers. Nicole was cooing and playing with her hair again.

“Aah-iiishchx!!!” Waverly turned her head away from her girlfriend as another wet sneeze rattled her weak body.

“Bless you baby,” Nicole hummed lovingly, snuggling even closer, rubbing Waverly’s arm and kissing her on the cheek while she snuffled into her sleeve. Wynonna fetched the box of tissues from beside the vanity, usually just used for makeup touch-ups, and placed it lightly beside her groggy sister on the bed.

“Thag you…” Waverly pulled out a tissue, and then another for good measure, cupping both firmly to her face as she scrunched her eyes up and blew her nose.

“Hey, look out, I think there’s a freight train coming through,” Wynonna joked lamely, earning a reassuringly exasperated look from her baby sister when she opened her eyes.

“Ha ha. You’re so helpful,” Waverly sighed, with a weary attempt at sarcasm that held no sting whatsoever.

“Hey, I know something helpful that Wynonna can do—go make some tea,” Nicole suggested, in the slightly bossy tone that Wynonna generally resisted on principle.

“You know this is my house and not yours, right Haught stuff?”

“Do you want Waverly to feel better or not?”

“Hht’iiischxu!! *Snghf.*” Waverly sneezed again, curling up weakly on her side with the crumpled tissues cupped to her cold, wet nose. Wynonna and Nicole both rushed to bless her, their bickering instantly forgotten.

“Please don’t fight…or I…*snghf*…I definitely wod’t feel better,” the woozy girl sighed, sniffling softly as she laid her hand appeasingly on her sister’s knee.

“Hey…it’s okay, angelpants. We’re not fighting. I’m just goofing around as usual,” the older Earp said reassuringly, squeezing her sister’s cold hand on her knee. “I’m happy to make tea for you, baby girl. More than happy. Super-stoked, even.” She winked, and Waverly smiled weakly.

“Thanks, bacon donut.” Waverly cupped the soggy tissues back to her mouth to cover a fresh cough. Wynonna winked and ruffled her hair.

“When I come back up here, everyone better have all their clothes on—just sayin’,” Wynonna warned, looking specifically at Nicole as she raised a stern eyebrow.

“There’s this crazy new thing called knocking,” Nicole responded dryly, her hand stroking Waverly’s hair again. “I’ve heard it’s super-helpful at not seeing things you don’t wanna see.”

“Cute.” Wynonna rolled her eyes. But she gave her sister’s girlfriend the same insider-wink that was usually reserved for Waverly alone, before climbing off the bed and heading down to the kitchen.

Aw, cute! I loved it. I’m a sucker for F/F stories and your glee stories actually were the main reason why I joined the forum, haha. I haven’t seen the show but it’s been recommended to me by numerous people of all different ages, so I’ll probably check it out one of these days if I have time.

But I’d definitely be interested in reading more :)

I know you haven’t been getting many responses lately, but I wanted to mention that, like FadedRose, I joined mainly for your stories - I signed up specifically to comment on “Just Like Clockwork,” a Faberry story of yours from like 2014. This story - as well as Just Like Clockwork and all of your other works - is incredible, and I just wanted to acknowledge your creative brilliance and let you know that there are probably many people that joined the forum because of your writing.

Wow. Thank you. That's amazing! I really wasn't fishing for compliments, though I sure AF appreciate it. That's super-legit. I just want there to be other queers here (or ppl who just like queer stuff, that works too lol) who like what I like. For a long time that seemed to be the case, and then it wasn't. Honestly, as long as i know I'm not screaming into the void, I'm happy!!! But I really really appreciate this feedback. Who wouldn't?!

Oops! I wrote another part of this instead of going to bed on time. Poor Waverly, she's just so damn cute and sweet and she needs some attention! Fortunately she has the best girlfriend and the best big sister a girl could ask for.

Chase Away the Chills

Part 2

………………………………………

“96.2,” Nicole pronounced, reading off the flashing display from the digital thermometer. She was cuddled up against her girlfriend’s shivery body under the blankets, skin to skin, with one leg thrown protectively over Waverly’s hip, covering as much of the smaller girl’s body as she could.

“That’s n-not so bad,” Waverly stuttered softly, snuggling up a bit closer to her girlfriend’s warmth and cupping a hand to her face to muffle a few croaky coughs.

“It’s not great, Waves,” the redhead sighed, running her hand through her girlfriend’s long hair and pressing her open palm tenderly against the side of Waverly’s face, letting the deep chill of her girlfriend’s skin soak into hers instead. Waverly closed her eyes and put her hand over Nicole’s, holding it there, with a tiny moan of pleasure. Nicole couldn’t help but smile, leaning in and dropping a gentle kiss on cold, blue lips.

“What’s not great?” Wynonna asked, as she entered with a steaming mug of tea cradled in both hands.

“Good job with the knocking. You’ve been practicing, haven’t you?” Nicole replied sarcastically; but with a smirk on her face, and no sting in her voice.

“Good job with the keeping your clothes on,” Wynonna replied, matching the teasing smirk with one of her own.

“Oh, relax, you can’t even see anything,” the redhead shrugged dismissively, her arm wrapping more snugly around her girlfriend under the blankets as Waverly curled up coughing again. “Besides, we’re still wearing bras and underwear. And she needs body heat.”

“Fine, be all sensible and heroic why don’t you,” the older Earp sighed, faking a dramatic tone as she plopped down on the edge of the bed beside her shivering sister, carefully placing the hot tea on the side table. “And don’t avoid the question, Haught. What’s not great?”

“Wave’s temp.” Nicole held out the thermometer. Wynonna grabbed it, her blue eyes going wide in a way Nicole had never seen before—certainly not when they were out fighting the eternal forces of darkness.

“Shitballs. I don’t know about this, baby girl…maybe we should go to the hospital.”

“No.” The small figure half-buried in blankets shook her head adamantly. “N-no hospital…I’m f-fine right here.”

“And you earned your medical degree where, Dr. Earp?” Wynonna raised a snarky eyebrow.

“Wynonna, stop it. I’m fine, ohhhh…okay…?” Nicole could feel the jagged hitch in her girlfriend’s breathing, even through the shivers; and she wrapped her arm protectively around Waverly’s waist under the covers, pressing the warmth of her whole body against the smaller girl’s side.

“Hhh…h-hhixchhew!!! *Snghf,*” Waverly trembled in Nicole’s warm arms, her body curling slightly into her girlfriend’s chest with both hands cupped snugly to her face.

“Bless you,” her sister and her girlfriend chorused in perfect harmony. Waverly wiped her nose on her wrist and sniffled with a heavy sigh, looking thoroughly miserable. Wynonna handed her a tissue.

“Aww, baby,” Nicole cooed, pressing a kiss to her girlfriend’s temple, her hand roaming all over Waverly’s chilled skin under the blankets. Waverly sniffled again and wiped her nose in the tissues, with a grumpy little whine. “I hate to say it, but maybe Wynonna’s right…it wouldn’t hurt to get checked out, would it?”

“I don’t need the hospital,” Waverly repeated stubbornly, as her eyes welled up slowly and her breath got huffy again. Wynonna passed her another tissue. “I…I just…have a…*snghf!*…a stupid cold…” She rubbed her nose lightly in the tissues as her exhausted eyes fell shut. “Aah-hhxtchiew!!! *Snfffl.*”

“A stupid cold with a tasty side dish of hypothermia,” her sister argued, while Nicole whispered bless you in her ear, and kissed the spot.

“Baby, please. I c-can’t go back there,” Waverly begged, looking to Nicole, her tired hazel eyes suddenly brimming with tears. “The last time w-we were there…you almost died.”

“Waves, baby...shh, please don’t cry sweet girl,” Nicole hummed, wiping the tears from her girlfriend’s face as they fell. “I didn’t die. And you’re not gonna die either, okay? You’re gonna be just fine. I promise.”

“No, I—it’s not about me, Nic,” Waverly shook her head weakly, putting her chilly hand over Nicole’s against the side of her face, and lacing their fingers together again. “The second I go in there…all I’ll s-see is you dying…I really, r-really thought you were gonna die…” The shivering girl dissolved into tears, hiding her face against Nicole’s throat.

“Okay, okay…hey, shh, it’s okay baby,” Nicole cooed, hugging her girlfriend’s shaking body tight and stroking her hair. “We don’t have to go to the hospital if you really don’t want to. We can take care of you here. Okay?”

“Th-thadks,” Waverly sniffled, wiping her runny nose on the used-up tissues she still held wadded up in one hand.

“Hey! Dr. Haught. How about a consult over here?!” Wynonna huffed anxiously. “I don’t like making her cry either, you know. But don’t you want a real doctor to tell us she’s okay? Waverly and hypothermia are not things we like to mix.”

“It’s not really hypothermia until you hit 95 degrees,” Nicole sighed. “And she’s still shivering…that’s a good sign. It’s still early. They won’t do anything too invasive even if we do bring her in; they’ll just treat her with heated blankets and warm fluids. And we can do that here.” She gestured to the tea that sat steaming by the bed. Wynonna stared her down silently for a moment.

“Yes. Here…*snf!*…here is good…” Waverly took a few shallow breaths and sneezed again, damp tissues cupped snugly to her face against Nicole’s chest. Her girlfriend just cuddled her and kissed her forehead.

“You better be damn sure you know what you’re talking about, Haught stuff,” Wynonna finally conceded, giving the tall cop her best scary-big-sister-stare, which, Nicole would never admit to her, was actually more intimidating than her about-to-kill-some-demons stare.

“Yeah, I do know. You think I’d do anything to risk Waverly’s safety? Seriously?” Nicole raised an eyebrow, and Wynonna finally relented.

“No. I know you wouldn’t. I’m just a little freaked out,” the older Earp admitted with a sigh.

“S’okay, Nonna…don’t be scared,” Waverly sighed softly, her eyes only half-open as her stiff, shivering muscles began to relax against the warmth of her girlfriend’s body. “I’ll be fi…*snf*…fine…hhxkshh!!” She squelched her sneeze in the soggy tissues she still held, eyes scrunched up helplessly tight with the effort.

“Aww, bless you baby,” Nicole chuckled a little, reaching out of the blankets for the small bedside trash bin that Wynonna held out to her. Waverly groaned softly, wiping her nose across the back of her arm with a deep, wet sniffle as she dropped the soggy tissues in.

“Dod’t laugh at how gross I amb,” she whined miserably, grudgingly taking the fresh tissues Nicole pressed into her hand and dabbing gingerly at her runny nose.

“I’m not laughing at you, Waves. Promise,” Nicole cooed indulgently, her fingers meandering through her girlfriend’s long hair again. “I’m sorry, I know you’re miserable right now…but you’re still just so cute…” Waverly grumbled disbelievingly, and Nicole hooked a finger under her chin, gently forcing her to look up. It didn’t take long for the younger girl’s cranky pout to dissolve into a shy smile under her girlfriend’s adoring gaze, and Nicole leaned down and kissed her soundly.

“Ahem! Still here,” Wynonna announced loudly, though the smile on Waverly’s face made it hard to stay annoyed about the PDA. “Okay, fine, I give. No hospital. But you have to drink some goddam tea at least.” She held out the gently steaming mug, that had cooled just enough not to burn. Nicole sat up a little against the pillows, and pulled her girlfriend snugly up against her, so Waverly didn’t really have to support her own weight.

“I’m with Wy on this one. This is gonna make you feel so much better, babe,” Nicole reached out for the tea, holding it close to Waverly’s lips, so the weak and shivery girl just had to put her hand on top to guide it as she took a little sip.

“Ohhhh my God…that’s the best tea I’ve ever had in my whole life,” Waverly sighed, going totally limp so her head dropped back against Nicole’s shoulder.

“Yes! One point for team tea!” Wynonna cheered, fist-pumping the air. Waverly grinned sleepily at her sister’s happiness, but it only lasted a moment before her breathing started to hitch again, and she rubbed her nose lightly in the tissues as her tired eyes slid closed. Nicole took one look at her girlfriend’s face, and put the tea down.

“Hh-hhh…hiiischxew!!! *S-snghf!*” Waverly shivered inside the blankets, sneezing weakly against Nicole’s shoulder with her eyes scrunched up helplessly behind the crumpled tissues.

“Bless you cutie,” Nicole hummed, kissing her forehead.

“Ughhh. This is balls,” Waverly whined, wiping tenderly at her nose again, which was getting very pink now against the pallor of her exhausted face. “I’mb sorry I keep sneezing on you, baby…you’re…*snghf*…gonna catch it…ehhxshiew!!!” Nicole just hugged her girlfriend’s small body closer, one hand on the back of her neck as Waverly sneezed on her shoulder again. She still held the tissues clamped to her face; but it wasn’t enough to totally contain the wet, stuffy sneezes that gripped her body.

“Hypothermia’s not contagious…and I think I’ll survive your adorable cold,” Nicole grinned, kissing Waverly’s forehead while the smaller girl sighed and blew her nose.

“’Kay…if you’re sure…” Waverly yawned and put her head down on Nicole’s shoulder. “Ughh, I’m so exhausted…but I’m still too cold to fall asleep…”

“Drink your tea, baby girl. It’s that or the hospital,” Wynonna warned sternly, whipping out her best big-sister-guilt stare. Nicole picked up the mug and held it close for her girlfriend again, interspersing sips of tea with kisses all over her face.

“Getting warmer?” Another kiss on her ear where the words were whispered.

“Uh-huh…a little,” Waverly sniffled, and sighed wearily.

“How about some heated blankets?” Nicole smiled encouragingly.

“We don’t have any heated blankets, Haught stuff,” Wynonna countered, still anxiously monitoring the tea intake and feeling thoroughly useless.

“We would if you put them in the dryer.”

“Oh. Okay. I see where this is going…chore wench Wynonna on duty. Can’t take away your personal space heater, huh Waves? Pretty convenient for Sheriff tater-Haught here.”

“Thanks Nonna,” Waverly smiled weakly; and Wynonna leaned over and kissed both their foreheads on her way out.

I loved the new part! I’ve seen the first three episodes of the first season and so far so good! It’s very cliche and corny and fake, but the characters give the show a lot of depth and meaning. Also, Nicole and Waverly are adorable. Very, very adorable. They aren’t even together yet but the way their relationship is already starting to builddddd, eek! I’m so excited to see how their relationship plays out :)

It IS very corny, but like all good sci-fi/fantasy, it's goofy and character-driven and the fantasy stuff is really just symbolic, it's the emotional lives of the characters that's the authentic part. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of buffy, in all the best ways (female-driven cast of demon hunters prone to aptly-timed quips, with snappy dialogue and a healthy sprinkling of laughs). And just WAIT until the wayhaught gets going... there is no precedent. Their chemistry is unbelievable. And did I mention HOW MUCH they make out???

On a related note, I haven't abandoned this story, part 3 will be forthcoming! Maybe even tomorrow...

Ooo-kaaay!!! Here's another part. Thx my dears for letting me know you're still out there! Enjoy the endless supply of sweetness, courtesy of Wayhaught.

Chase Away the Chills

Part 3

………………………………..

Nicole was sitting up in Waverly’s bed, reading through the latest BBD/PSD joint case files by the light of the bedside lamp, when her girlfriend finally started to stir. Files instantly forgotten, the redhead shoved all her papers aside and snuggled down into the blankets next to the smaller girl, one hand going automatically to play with her hair across the pillow.

“Hey sleepyhead,” Nicole hummed, waiting patiently while sleep-glazed hazel eyes slowly blinked open to meet hers. “How are you feeling, hmm baby?”

“Hey…what time is it?” Waverly mumbled, her voice soft and croaky with sleep.

“A little after ten,” Nicole said quietly, her fingers grazing methodically through her girlfriend’s long hair and rubbing her scalp.

“Why’s it dark?” Waverly blinked at the soft light of the bedside lamp, hazy and confused.

“It’s ten at night, Waves. You slept the whole day,” Nicole explained gently. “Poor baby, you’re really out of it now, huh? Do you remember what happened?” Instead of answering, Waverly started to cough, pulling the blankets up over her face to shield her girlfriend. But Nicole had no interest in being shielded; she just scooted closer and wrapped one arm around the shaking girl’s waist, lightly rubbing her back until the raspy coughing fit subsided.

“Ughhh…I’mb sick,” Waverly mumbled, like she was just now realizing it, rubbing her eyes absently with one hand.

“I know, baby…don’t worry, I’m right here, I got you,” Nicole cooed, pressing her forehead to her girlfriend’s quietly for a moment, just soothing her without words. Waverly sniffled sleepily, making a soft, wet sound; and Nicole rolled over to grab the tissues from the nightstand. “Here you go, cutie pie.”

“Thadks…*snghf*…” the woozy girl took a tissue and blew her nose, sounding awfully congested. She sighed and made a soft, cranky little grumbling noise as she took another tissue, just dabbing lightly at the tender pink underside of her runny nose now. Nicole kissed her forehead.

“Is…*snnf*…is everybody else…ohhh-k-kay? Aahhschxew!!! *Snghf.*” Waverly trembled when she sneezed, cupping the damp tissues snugly to her pale face.

“Bless you.” Nicole kissed her forehead again. “And yeah, everyone’s fine. Except you, huh baby? Do you remember what happened?” Gentle fingers wove through her hair again, rubbing her scalp, stroking against the back of her neck. Waverly sighed behind her tissues.

“Snow…woods…I was tied to a chair…it was so cold,” she murmured, her eyes far away as the foggy memories of the last two days slowly cleared. “Derek…*snghf!*…he kidnapped mbe…”

“Fuck! That creepy guy at the jeweler’s. So he was a revenant after all,” Nicole half-snarled, her lip curling protectively.

“Yuh-huh…*s-snf*…” Waverly reached for the tissues again, rubbing her nose gingerly through the thin cotton as her eyes closed and her breath became uneven again. “He…he r-really…wadted the…hhuhh…hhit’chhxiiew!!” Another shiver, another sneeze, another softly doting bless you; this time with a kiss between her eyes.

“Ughh…*snghf!*…sorry. The ring, he wandted the ring,” Waverly sighed, dabbing her nose gently in the damp tissues again. They were already pretty soggy. “Uhhhmb…*snf*…” She knew there was a small trash bin under the nightstand, but it was on Nicole’s side. She thought about sitting up to lean over her girlfriend and toss her soggy tissues; but her body wilted just at the idea. She was not feeling very enthusiastic about the notion of being vertical, or dislodging the warm blankets she was snuggled under.

“It’s okay, babe. Give it here.” Nicole took the soggy, crumpled tissues right out of Waverly’s hands, kissing her forehead again in the process, and rolled over to toss them in the trash. If the dark-haired girl hadn’t been so pale and sick, she definitely would have blushed.

“You touched my snot,” Waverly groaned, hiding her face behind her hands in embarrassment so only her eyes peeked out between her fingers. “That’s…*snghf*…really…ndot sexy…” Nicole waited patiently while her sniffly girlfriend reached for another tissue, stroking her hair while her breath gave a shallow huff behind the cotton. “Hhtx’iishhew!!! *Snfl.*” Waverly shivered, and Nicole kissed her forehead again, over the little spot that crinkled adorably when she sneezed.

“Aww, Waves. You really don’t have to worry about that, okay?” the redhead cooed, wrapping a strand of long brown hair around her finger and giving it an affectionate little tug. “You are the cutest, sweetest, hottest girl in the whole goddam world. Always.” She sealed the pronouncement with a gentle, undemanding kiss, that lasted only a few moments before Waverly pulled back dizzily in need of air, totally unable to breathe through her stuffed nose.

“Sorry,” the shorter girl sighed meekly, with a soft, liquid sniffle as she folded her tissues over and wiped her runny nose again. “Ughh, I hate this…I’mb so gross and I feel so awful, and you’re still trying to be romantic, and I’mb…*snghf*…I’m ruining it…” Nicole just played with her hair and waited patiently, watching that cute little spot between her girlfriend’s eyes crinkle up again as her gaze drifted out of focus, and her breath trembled.

“Aah’TXCHIEW!! *Snfl*…” Waverly shivered all over as her small body curled up under the blankets with a surprisingly loud sneeze, tissues pressed snugly to her damp nose. She sniffled again, and sighed despondently. Nicole just about melted.

“Aw, baby. Bless you,” the redhead hummed, with another kiss to her forehead. She took the soggy, used up tissues from Waverly’s hands again and rolled over hastily to toss them in the trash, then quickly rolled back toward her girlfriend and stroked the side of her face, giving the younger girl her best dimpled smile. Waverly looked away shyly, reaching for more tissues.

“You’re not gross, okay? Not ever,” the tall cop said emphatically. “But right now you’re so miserable, I can feel it…and all I can think about is making you feel better. Just relax and let me take care of you, baby, please? It’s all I wanna do.” Nicole beamed at the girl she loved, just as heartbreakingly beautiful as ever with her long hair sleep-mussed, her sleepy, glazed hazel eyes, her perfect little nose running slightly and rubbed pink around the damp underside. The redhead’s adoring gaze was so pure, Waverly couldn’t help giving her a shy smile in return. “You’ll feel better soon, sweet girl. I promise. Until then, you’ll just have to settle for the world’s-most-adorable-sniffles award. ‘Kay baby?”

“You always know what to say,” the woozy girl sighed, dropping her tissues to play with her girlfriend’s fiery red hair.

“It’s easy. I just tell the truth,” Nicole grinned, leaning in and pressing another soft kiss to the younger girl’s pale lips. Waverly couldn’t help smiling; and for a moment they just stayed cuddled up with their foreheads pressed together. But then she jerked back with a raspy cough, ducking her head down with her hands clamped tightly to her face.

“Oww…I don’t feel good,” she whimpered softly, while Nicole rubbed light circles over her back.

“Aw, baby, I know,” the tall cop cooed gently. “Here, drink some water…” She rolled over and grabbed the water bottle off the nightstand, and Waverly gulped it down, suddenly aware of how thirsty she was. She handed it back with a heavy sigh, and Nicole wrapped her up in a tight hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. Waverly burrowed contentedly into her girlfriend’s chest for a minute; then her breath sharpened in the back of her throat, and Nicole pressed a fresh tissue into her hands.

“Hhhh…” Waverly shuddered helplessly, pushing her runny nose snugly into the tissue in anticipation. Nicole’s hand was in her hair again, thumb rubbing lovingly over the back of her neck. “Aahtxchhew!!! *Snnf.*” Her forehead pressed into Nicole’s chest, and Waverly tried her best to muffle her sniffly sneeze in the tissue, hoping to avoid spreading her germs despite all her girlfriend’s sweet assurances.

“Bless you baby.” Another kiss was pressed to Waverly’s forehead. The smaller girl just sighed wearily. “I know babe, I know…you’re really miserable. And you just slept for sixteen hours straight, and before that you were, you know, kidnapped—so you must be hungry. How about something warm and yummy to eat, hmm?”

“Yeah, I guess…but my stomach feels icky…I don’t know what I want,” the sniffly girl grumbled, pulling out another tissue and cupping them together to blow her nose.

“Welllll…your sister is right downstairs, I bet she knows what you like to eat when you’re sick, huh? Wanna ask her to make you something? Pretty sure she’ll give you literally anything you want right now.” Nicole wiggled her eyebrows goofily; Waverly giggled weakly, and then immediately coughed.

“Ughh. I guess. Do I…*snghf*…have to get up…?” Her sentence trailed off into an airy yawn, as she snuggled her head into the warm, safe position under Nicole’s chin that they both took comfort from.

“You don’t have to do anything, Waves.” Nicole wrapped her arm more snugly around her girlfriend’s smaller body, one hand snaking into long hair again. “You do whatever you want. And do whatever you want. And probably Wynonna too, ‘cause who are we kidding.” Nicole kissed the top of her head, and Waverly sighed, sounding a little less miserable that time.

“You’re always so sweet to me…like, always, always…*snf!*” The dark-haired girl groped for more tissues from the box nestled into the blankets with them, bringing them up to her damp pink nose with a soft snuffle.

“Yeah, well. You make it pretty easy,” the redhead murmured, her face lit up with a dopey smile as she pulled back a little, just enough to tilt Waverly’s chin up and look into her beautiful eyes before pressing another kiss to her forehead. “Now, it’s time for food to happen.” Instead of getting out of bed and leaving her girlfriend cold and alone, Nicole just reached for her phone on the nightstand. They could hear it ringing faintly from downstairs.

“Hey dude. Waves woke up finally. Time for room service.” Waverly laughed a little at how silly it was, Nicole calling Wynonna from inside the house to order room service. Then the laugh turned into a wispy tickle than unfurled into the back of her head, and she was nuzzling her runny nose into the damp tissues with a soft, involuntary huff of air.

“HhehIIISHxew!!! *Snghf*…” She sneezed against Nicole’s chest again, pressing her nose firmly into the soggy tissues while her girlfriend’s hand wrapped protectively into her hair, cuddling her closer.

“Wynonna says bless you,” the tall cop smirked gently as she put her phone aside and dropped more kisses on her girlfriend’s pale forehead. “And oatmeal with brown sugar and almond milk is on the way.”

Hello my dears! I wrote another part for this, because apparently I need this story more than food or sleep. The magic of WayHaught is real!! Thanks for chiming in, it's so much more fun that way!

ALSO. You guys. I just found out there's a new Wynona Earp comic coming out this summer (the show is based on the comic to begin with), that comes with a BONUS mini-comic that's just about WayHaught, AND they let Dom and Kat write it (the actresses who play Waverly and Nicole); AND the premise is that they're caught in a supernatural blizzard together; AND the title is WayCold. YES. I KNOW. ALL THE FEELS. SOOOO I think we all know what my next story prompt will be...enjoy!

Chase Away the Chills

Part 4

…………………………………

“All right, I’m knocking! This is me knocking,” Wynonna harrumphed as she pushed Waverly’s door open with her hip, both hands on the tray she was carrying.

“Not sure it counts as knocking if you don’t wait for the answer,” Nicole pointed out wryly, as she paused the movie they were watching on Waverly’s laptop. The smaller girl was curled up half on top of her, still buried in a toasty pile of blankets, the tissues propped against Nicole’s other side in easy reach.

“Well, Haught sauce, I was pretty much counting on you not to be the kind of jerkbag slimeball who’d try to put the moves on my little sister when she’s too sick to get out of bed,” the older Earp replied easily, her usual teasing smirk firmly in place as she put her tray down on the nightstand and plopped herself onto the bed beside them.

“Thank you, I guess?” Nicole frowned, slightly bemused as to what the appropriate response to that roundabout compliment was, her fingers sifting absently through her girlfriend’s long hair. “Still be nice for you to keep working on the whole knocking thing, though.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’ll get right on that once the world’s cutest snot monster is back on her feet,” Wynonna waved a hand dismissively, turning her full attention to her sister. “How’re you feeling, angelpants? I think you set a new record for the world’s longest nap.”

“Does it…*snghf!*…really count as a nap if I was awake for two days beforehand?” Waverly sighed, with a brave attempt at a jokey smile.

“Totally good point, and also, don’t ever scare us like that again.” Wynonna leaned down and planted a noisy kiss on her sister’s forehead.

“No getting kidnapped by revenants…I’ll try to remember that for next time,” Waverly grinned weakly, and coughed into her tissues.

“See that you do. Now, can you sit up a little? Time to get some food in you, kiddo.” Waverly nodded sleepily, pushing herself off the warmth of her girlfriend’s body and sitting up woozily against the pillows, finally dislodging the blankets she’d been snuggled under all day. Nicole had managed to help her change into her favorite pink cupcake pajamas before she fell asleep; but as cozy as they were, she still felt chilled at the sudden loss of the blankets and her girlfriend’s body heat, and she immediately wrapped her arms around herself with a little shiver.

“Are you cold, baby?” Nicole asked, sitting up beside her and wrapping an arm protectively around her shoulders. Waverly just nodded unhappily, with a stuffy little sniffle. Wynonna bounced up from her seat on the edge of the bed without waiting to be asked, crossing to her sister’s dresser and pulling out the first sweatshirt she found in the bottom drawer, a navy blue Purgatory Sheriff’s Department hoodie that looked a little too big to be Waverly’s.

“Thadks,” the younger Earp murmured, pulling the soft hoodie over her head and snuggling down into it with a sigh of relief, reaching across Nicole’s stomach to pull out a few more tissues.

“I asked you if you had that last week, and you said no,” Nicole pointed out wryly, giving her girlfriend an affectionate little poke in the ribs.

“Yeah, I lied…sorry…” Waverly huffed softly, glassy hazel eyes narrowing to slits as she slowly cupped the tissues to her runny nose, rubbing methodically as her breath wobbled unevenly. “Iiiischhx!! *Snnghf.*” She pitched forward with a helpless shudder, Nicole’s steadying arm still wrapped around her shoulders.

“It’s okay, baby…I’m glad it’s keeping you warm,” the redhead hummed, squeezing her arm a little tighter around her girlfriend’s slight frame and kissing her pale cheek.

“Thags…*snnf*…I just like wearing your clothes sometibes,” the smaller girl sighed, folding her tissues over to blow her nose sleepily, her exhausted eyes out of focus as she rubbed the bottom of her nose in little circles, holding the tissues snug in both hands. “Uhh’chxsh!!” She shivered again, and coughed wearily into her damp tissues.

“Bless you,” Nicole cooed, dropping another soft kiss on the smaller girl’s temple and rubbing her nose affectionately into messy, light brown hair. “And I like seeing you wearing my clothes, so I guess we both win,” the tall cop grinned, her thumb grazing lovingly over her girlfriend’s cheek as she leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to Waverly’s lips, unperturbed by the slight slickness of her runny nose.

“Oy. You two should come with a sweetness-content-warning. Do people ever just keel over and go into diabetic comas when you walk down the street together?” Wynonna plopped back down beside them, reaching for the little plastic cup of bright red cold medicine from the tray and thrusting it expectantly in her sister’s face. “Drink up, chilly willy. Guaranteed to decrease your whole snot-faucet situation by at least 30%,” the older Earp teased gently. Waverly pouted, but she took the cup without argument, gulping down the thick red syrup like a shot of tequila.

“Blechh…gross,” the younger girl moaned softly, making an adorable face of disgust with her eyes scrunched up tight.

“Aww, poor baby,” Nicole chuckled, taking the empty plastic cup out of her hands and replacing it with the fresh mug of tea Wynonna passed her from the tray. “Here’s something you’ll like better…” Waverly took a sip of the tea and sighed gratefully, her sleepy eyes sliding closed in a moment of pleasure.

“I really, really love you both a lot,” she remarked absently, blinking her eyes open with a tired smile.

“We love you too, baby girl.” Wynonna reached out and ruffled her sister’s sleep-mussed hair. “So much that I’ll even promise not to record you acting like a goofy little stoner fuck once those cold meds kick in and you’re high as balls.” The older Earp chuckled. Nicole raised an eyebrow curiously.

“Lightweight with the NyQuil, are we?” the tall cop teased her girlfriend gently, getting all the confirmation she needed from the amused expression on Wynonna’s face.

“I thought…that was the whole point of that stuff?” Waverly yawned, passing the tea back to her sister as she dropped her head limply against her girlfriend’s shoulder. “It really doesn’t make me feel any less sick…just makes me forget to care.” The cuff of the slightly-oversized sweatshirt fell down over her hand, and she cupped it snugly to her mouth to cover a cough, rubbing her pink nose roughly in the fabric. “Hhh—hhaeshxiiew!!!” She trembled against Nicole’s side, pushing her nose more firmly into her damp cuff with an exhausted sigh.

“Here, baby,” Nicole nudged her, offering fresh tissues. Waverly cupped them snugly to her face, raising her head from the taller girl’s shoulder with a soft huff as her whole body trembled again.

“Hhk’iiishx!! *Snghf*…ughh, thag you,” she sighed despondently. Nicole hated the note of misery in her girlfriend’s voice, leaning in to plant a few more kisses across the side of her face.

“Hey, sibling still in the room, trying not to hurl,” Wynonna teased, prodding her sister’s stomach through the squishy layers of blankets, plus Nicole’s hoodie.

“You’ll live,” Waverly sighed unapologetically, nuzzling contentedly back down against her girlfriend’s shoulder. “She’s making mbe feel better. *Snf!*”

“Ya know what else will make you feel better?” Wynonna took the opportunity to push the tray across Waverly’s lap, containing a bowl of gently steaming oatmeal. “Getting some food in you. How long do you think it’s been since you ate anything, huh?”

“Uhmmb…what day is it again? *Snghf.*” Waverly grinned weakly, wiped her nose one more time, and picked up the spoon, prodding absently at the blob of oatmealy goodness. “Did you—”

“Yes, I added peanut butter,” Wynonna cut her off before she could even get out the question. “This isn’t my first rodeo, ya know.”

“Thadks,” the younger girl smiled sleepily, tasting a small spoonful. “Ohhhh, that’s so good,” she sighed, closing her eyes and dropping her head against her girlfriend’s arm. “Thag you soooo much…”

“Oatmeal one, creepy Gollum ring-fetishizing revenant, zero,” Wynonna cheered in her slightly sarcastic, fake sports announcer voice, holding her hand up for a high-five. Waverly smiled weakly, but instead of returning her sister’s high-five, she wrapped one arm across her face with a wheezy shudder, afraid to spill the tray if she leaned over to get the tissues.

“Hhhshx!! *Snghf*…” Her eyes scrunched up tight as she pushed her nose hard into her sleeve, still determined to keep her germs to herself and not spread her awful cold around.

“Bless you,” Nicole and Wynonna said at the same time. Waverly snuffled into her sleeve, and Nicole pressed some tissues into her hand.

“Thag you…” Waverly croaked softly, blowing her nose half-heartedly in the fresh tissues and leaning her head against her girlfriend’s arm. “Ughh. Whed is the stupid red stuff gonna kick in?”

“Any minute now,” Wynonna said soothingly, her tone shifting abruptly from her usual good-natured teasing, to the tender voice that was for Waverly alone.

“I’mb so tired…how can I…*snf!*…be so tired whed I just slept for sixteen hours?”

“I’ve heard that nearly freezing to death can really take it out of you,” the older Earp teased gently. But all she got from her sister was a cranky little grumbling sound. Then the sniffling girl closed her eyes, pressing the tissues back to her damp nose with a little shiver.

“Hhuh…aahxchhiew!! HhxtIISHHew!!!” Waverly sneezed twice, breath shuddering, pitching over hard enough that the tray of tea and oatmeal slid sideways off her lap. Thanking her great-great-grandfather for her speedy gunslinger reflexes, Wynonna grabbed it before it could spill its contents across the blankets.

“Aww, baby…I wish it was me instead of you, I hate seeing you so miserable,” Nicole cooed, kissing her girlfriend’s forehead and slipping one hand under the blankets to rub her stomach. “I’d switch places with you if I could, you know. In a heartbeat.”

“That’s sweet…you’re the sweetest,” Waverly sighed, with a soft yawn.

“Nope. That’s you,” Nicole smiled gently, tracing her fingers lightly over the side of her girlfriend’s face. “But I’ll settle for the silver on that one. Now can you eat a little more, babe, please? Just stay awake a few minutes longer? You’re not gonna get better without any fuel in your tank.”

“Ohhh yeah…I have oatmeal,” the younger girl yawned again, rubbing her eyes.

“Peanut butter oatmeal,” Wynonna reminded her, cautiously depositing the tray back onto her sister’s lap. “With brown sugar. Your favorite, remember? Listen to your girlfriend and eat, baby girl. Or I’ll take away all your Pixar sick day movies and make you watch sports.”

“Doe you wod’t,” Waverly sighed with a small smile, blowing her nose gingerly one more time before stuffing her tissues into the pocket of her hoodie. “But I’ll eat it adyway…it is mby favorite.” She picked up the spoon and took another bite of oatmeal. Nicole and Wynonna grinned at each other like idiots.

“Speaking of Pixar movies…” Nicole picked up the laptop that she’d pushed aside earlier, waking it up from sleep mode to show the frozen image of Doug the dog, tongue lolling happily as he clung to the enormous leg of Kevin the bird. Wynonna chuckled.

“Could’ve guessed you’d pick that one. You made me take you to see it four times when it came out.”

“Yeah, ‘cause it’s the best,” Waverly smiled again sleepily, wiping her nose on the back of her wrist before she took another bite of oatmeal.

“I was hiding under your porch because I love you,” Nicole hummed in her ear, dropping a kiss on her temple. Waverly grinned shyly and took another spoonful of oatmeal.

HOLY SHITBALLS.

That...is something I don't even know how to respond to. Wow. Wow wow. Thank you for telling me that! I guarantee you I'm gonna remember this every time I feel shitty about myself. I'm actually working on a real-world kind of writing project now...a speculative fantasy YA graphic novel... and tbh I did get hella derailed by WayHaught falling into my lap (about a month ago), I kinda fell down a rabbit hole on that one, not that I'm sorry about it! But I did get sidetracked. And even without that excuse, I feel like I'm constantly ping-ponging btw being super excited and just IN IT, and other times feeling like I'm out of my mind for thinking I can do this. I've never embarked on something this big before, and even though I totally know what it's about and who the important characters are... it's still really intimidating! I'm not great at structure and discipline. But getting a positive reality check every now and then (aka a reminder that I am in fact pretty awesome at this whole writing thing) is a huge boost! Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. !!!

Chase Away the Chills

Part 5

………………………………….

The next time Waverly woke up, she wasn’t entirely sure whether she really was awake, or still dreaming. Everything felt fuzzy and floaty around her; and when she blinked up at her girlfriend’s sweet, dimpled smile beaming down at her, she could have sworn there was a glowing, angelic aura radiating around the edges of her shiny red hair, lighting up the darkness in the room far more than the gentle warmth of the bedside lamp.

“Is this…real life?” the sleepy girl murmured woozily, reaching out to run her fingers through Nicole’s hair, checking to see whether the glow she saw was really there.

“Yeah, baby, this is real life,” the tall cop grinned indulgently, wrapping one arm around Waverly’s waist under the covers and slipping her hand up the back of her girlfriend’s pajama top, trailing her fingers lightly over soft skin. Waverly sighed, a happy little sigh, in stark contrast to all the miserable, exhausted, sniffly sighs from earlier in the night. “Guess the red stuff finally kicked in, huh? You’ve been talking in your sleep for, like, the last five minutes at least. Sounded like you were having some good dreams…but you’re awake now, right?”

“I thidk so…” Waverly yawned, taking her hand back from Nicole’s hair to rub her eyes as she stretched her stiff muscles in the nest of blankets, arching her back like a cat and then curling up again snugly under Nicole’s arm. “You’d…*snghf!*…you’d tell mbe if this was a dream…right?” She wiped her nose absently on the back of her wrist.

“Aww, baby…” Nicole chuckled, stroking a few messy locks of long hair back from Waverly’s face before leaning in to kiss her forehead, letting her lips linger there while her fingers ran through the soft hair at the back of her girlfriend’s neck. “You’re not dreaming. You’re just sleepy and sick and stoned on cold meds. Don’t worry about anything, okay? I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere without you.”

“I’mb ndot worried,” Waverly smiled sleepily, pinching the pink underside of her stuffy nose with another soft, wet sniffle. “I ndever worry whed you’re here. *Snghf.*” Nicole rolled over and grabbed the tissues from the bedside table, depositing the box gently in the small space between their bodies with another lingering kiss to the sniffling girl’s forehead.

Despite the lateness of the hour, and the fact that she’d been dragged from sleep by her girlfriend’s unconscious, cold-stuffed mumbling, the redheaded cop felt a deep, glowing contentment in the center of her chest; like a cat’s purr curled up inside her. Waverly was safe, and any extra attention and care she needed while she wasn’t feeling well, Nicole was beyond happy to be the one to provide it. Nothing short of a county-wide demon siege was going to move her from her girlfriend’s side right now, she knew, her heart thumping protectively in her chest as her hand found its way back into Waverly’s soft brown hair.

“I was…*snghf*…really talking id mby sleep?” the younger girl yawned softly, pulling a few tissues from the box and dabbing tenderly at her pink nose.

“Mm-hmm,” Nicole agreed gently, nestling back down into the pillows and pressing their foreheads together for a moment. “You kept saying you could fly with the angels…but only if I kissed you first.”

“Awesombe…*snnf*…let’s do that right ndow. I’ll dream we cad both fly. Just…let mbe dream you too…’kay baby?” Waverly’s voice was soft and trance-like, and Nicole couldn’t help the grin that spread across her face as she pressed another kiss to the shorter girl’s forehead, pulling back to look in her sleep-dazed hazel eyes.

“You’re going to kill me with cuteness one of these days, Waverly Earp. I just know it,” Nicole hummed, a sleepy smile plastered across her face as she watched her girlfriend’s face scrunch up adorably while she blew her nose. Waverly sighed and blinked back at her, dropping her tissues for a moment to reach for Nicole’s hair, threading her fingers through the thick red locks she loved so much. For a moment Nicole thought Waverly was going to pull her down by the back of her neck for a kiss; but just as the smaller girl’s warm hand tightened in her hair, her stuffy breath stuttered into a sniffly huff, and suddenly the fingers that had been entwined in Nicole’s hair were pressed back to Waverly’s damp nose, pushing the raw pink underside into the snug space between her thumb and forefinger.

“Hhh-hhhih-iiischew!!! *Snfl*…” Warm hazel eyes squeezed helplessly shut, a shiver running down her back under the blankets. She sniffled and pinched the wetness between her fingers, and Nicole pulled out a fresh tissue, tenderly cupping it around her girlfriend’s slick pink nose.

“Blow,” the redhead hummed soothingly, lightly rubbing Waverly’s runny nose through the cotton as the woozy girl obediently scrunched up her eyes and gave a soft, sleepy blow into the tissue her girlfriend held for her. Nicole was very gentle as she dabbed at the bottom of Waverly’s delicate pink nose, relinquishing her hold as soon as her girlfriend’s hand came up woozily to take control of the damp tissues.

“Ughhh…thadks, baby,” Waverly sighed softly behind her tissues. Nicole stroked her cheek and kissed her forehead again. “I doe this…*snfl*…must be real, ‘cause if I was dreaming, I could make mby nose stop running. And, we could be havidg sex ond a beach. Or a cloud. That would be cool…right?” The sleepy, sniffling girl kept her nose nuzzled in the damp tissues as she rambled, rubbing her pink-rimmed nostrils in little circles as her eyes began to flutter and narrow again.

“Very cool,” Nicole agreed, winding a lock of long hair around her finger and giving it an affectionate tug, watching that cute little spot between her girlfriend’s eyes crinkle up helplessly as her breath trembled.

“Hhehschxew!! *S-snf*…” Waverly’s whole body shuddered as she curled in on herself with another helplessly sick sneeze into the soggy tissues, Nicole’s hand still wrapped protectively into her hair.

“Bless you baby,” the redhead cooed, leaning in and pressing a kiss between her girlfriend’s eyes while Waverly sniffled and wiped her nose again.

“Uhhhh…*snghf*…I thig I ndeed mbore tissues,” the smaller girl sighed, one hand still pressing the soggy tissues lightly to her runny nose, while the other hand scraped the empty bottom of the box between them.

“We can manage that,” Nicole grinned, dropping one more kiss on her girlfriend’s forehead as she took the empty box and sat up, yawning hugely. It was the middle of the night now, and the redhead was pretty sleepy too; but in the choice between sleep, and caring for Waverly’s miserable cold, it was easy to shrug off her tiredness and climb out of bed, stretching her arms with a soft sigh. “I’ll be right back, ‘kay cutie? You just stay right there and keep the blankets warm for me.”

“Doe problem,” Waverly sighed; the stuffy, sniffly, I’m-gonna-sneeze-any-second sigh that Nicole had quickly come to recognize in the last 24 hours. “I’ll…be r-right h-here…aahKXSHeww!!! *Snghhhf.*” She cupped her hands loosely over the soggy tissues, jerking into another desperately congested sneeze under the pile of cozy blankets.

“Bless you, my poor sweet baby…I’ll be right back.” Nicole didn’t wait for a reply before she scrambled out the door and down the hall to the bathroom, eager to get back again as quick as she could and not make Waverly wait any longer than necessary. She didn’t even bother looking through the bag of drug store goodies Wynonna had brought back from town earlier in the day; she just grabbed it and brought the whole thing back to Waverly’s room, where she found her girlfriend curled up adorably snug under the blankets, her long hair fanned out across the pillow. Her eyes were closed, but Nicole knew she was still awake, because she was rubbing her sniffly nose clumsily, the cuff of her pajama top pulled down over the back of her hand.

“Aww, babe. Hang on, we’ve got plenty more tissues in here somewhere…” Nicole rooted through the bag, pulling open the perforated top of a fresh box of tissues and holding out a few to the sniffling girl. Waverly looked up at her through heavily lidded eyes, letting go of her nose to take the fresh tissues from her girlfriend’s hand. Nicole felt a pang of protectiveness stabbing right through her heart at the sight of Waverly so helpless and out of sorts, with dark shadows under her glassy eyes, her normally glowing olive-toned skin unnaturally pale; the pink underside of her nose and the divot of her upper lip shining with a thin sheen of snot, lit gently by the dim light of the bedside lamp as her breath stuttered wearily in the back of her throat.

“HhiiIISHhxew!!! *Snfl*…” Waverly sneezed again, tissues pushed hastily to her runny nose as her eyes squeezed shut and her breath shuddered in her chest. Nicole wrapped a sheltering arm around her, pressing another warm kiss to her forehead.

“Bless you. Poor thing…those cold meds really aren’t helping much at all, are they?” The tall cop sighed, rubbing soothing circles over her girlfriend’s back. Waverly coughed sharply into her tissues.

“Does…*snghf*…mbaking mbe feel all floaty and stoned count as helping?” The smaller girl yawned, with a weak smile.

“Aww. I dunno babe, you tell me,” Nicole cooed; and Waverly just gave a little half-shrug. “Well that’s okay, sweet girl, we’ve got a bunch more stuff in here that might help too. Wynonna went into town while you were sleeping.” Nicole sat up and retrieved the drug store bag from where she’d dropped it on the floor beside the bed.

“Oh yeah? What’d she get, whiskey and tequila?” Waverly giggled, sounding thoroughly amused by her own joke as she wiped her nose in a fresh tissue.

“Ha ha. Not a bad guess, if she was shopping for herself…but no, I think you’re already drugged up enough, little miss floaty-pants, aren’t you?” Nicole smirked at her girlfriend’s goofy grin, glad to see her smiling even if it was only because she was totally high on cold meds; all warm and floaty and blurry around the edges.

“Yuh-huh…probably…*snghhf*…” Waverly sighed sharply, her tired eyes already closed as she nuzzled her damp, twitching nose into a fresh tissue. “Aah’htxchOOoo!!!” Her small body trembled under the blankets with another exhausted, cold-stuffed sneeze, runny nose pushed desperately into the crumpled tissues.

“Bless you babe,” Nicole cooed, pressing another tissue into her girlfriend’s hands, confident from the soft up-note of that last sneeze that another one was coming quick. Sure enough, Waverly pressed the tissues snugly back to her nose as her eyes cracked half-open, and immediately slid shut again, her breath catching erratically in the back of her throat with a deep huff.

“Iiih-hhshxuh!! *Snfl*…uhhh, head rush,” the woozy girl sighed, while Nicole kissed her forehead and played with her hair. With a final sharp sniffle, Waverly dropped her tissues on top of the blankets, rubbing at her bleary eyes now. “So…what’s id the goody bag, if id’s ndot booze? *Snghf.*”

“Let’s see…cough drops…throat spray…tissues…more tissues…and some Vicks rub. Do you like this stuff? I think it would help.” Nicole held up the jar for her girlfriend’s inspection.

“Oh, fuck yeah,” Waverly groaned happily; and this time Nicole was the one who giggled.

“Okay, now I know you’re high as balls if you’re saying fuck instead of fudgenuggets,” the redhead chuckled, shaking her head in amusement. “C’mere, dopey…can I?” She rested one hand on the top button of her girlfriend’s pajama top, but didn’t make a move to unbutton it without Waverly’s permission.

“Of course, silly,” the younger girl smiled, shifting slightly under the blankets so she was lying more on her back, with a sideways swipe of her nose against her wrist. “I always wadt you to touch mbe. *Snghf.*”

“Well good, because I always want to,” Nicole hummed, leaning down and dropping a soft kiss on Waverly’s lips. When she pulled back, she felt a slight smear of cool wetness under her nose, and she wiped it on the back of her sleeve with an indulgent little smirk. Earlier in the night, Waverly had been so embarrassed just from Nicole touching her snotty tissues to throw them out for her…but this time when she covered her face with her hands, she was giggling woozily. Either Nicole had done a really good job of reassuring her before, or she was just really stoned on NyQuil. Possibly both.

“Oh, fuck, baby…sorry I slimed you. But you…*snghf*…you did kinda ask for it,” Waverly laughed weakly, pulling out a few fresh tissues.

“And I’d do it again,” Nicole agreed, grinning goofily while she waited for her girlfriend to finish blowing her nose. As soon as Waverly dropped her hands down to her stomach, the tall cop leaned in and kissed her again, a little more thoroughly this time, one hand stroking her pale cheek. “…See?” Nicole murmured, and Waverly hummed contentedly. They lapsed into a comfortable silence as the redhead undid the top two buttons of her girlfriend’s cozy cupcake-patterned pajama top, pushing it open to expose her collarbone to the air. Nicole pressed one hand over the soft skin, leaning down to drop a kiss there before she reached for the little blue jar on the bedside table.

“How do you do that?” Waverly murmured croakily, her warm hazel eyes shining with adoration as Nicole gently smoothed a dab of the minty goop across her chest.

“Do what, baby?” Nicole asked absently, lost in the wash of happiness that came with getting to do something to help Waverly feel a little better; especially when it was something that also involved more touching.

“Make mbe feel so special and important…all the time,” the dark-haired girl yawned softly.

“You are special and important. All the time,” Nicole grinned, screwing the cap back on the little jar before cuddling back up to her girlfriend’s warm body under the blankets, one hand grazing lovingly over her cheek. “You’re an angel, Waverly Earp…an honest-to-God, heaven-sent angel. I don’t know how you didn’t already know that…or how I got lucky enough to be the one to show you.” Tears welled up in Waverly’s eyes and spilled down her cheeks as she snuggled up closer to Nicole; and Nicole didn’t try to tell her not to cry. She just brushed away the tears as they fell, dropping soft, lingering kisses all over her girlfriend’s face. They cuddled close enough to press their foreheads together, both of them breathing in the soothing, minty vapor wafting gently off Waverly’s skin.

“D’you feel better, baby?” Nicole yawned softly; and she was just dimly aware of her girlfriend’s drowsy hum of assent before they both sunk quickly and deeply back to sleep, wrapped up securely in each other’s arms.
